It’s a phone that feels substantial – when the 13 Pro Max sits in your hand, it feels like you’re holding something really special.

But just because you like big things doesn’t mean you like oversized complications. Like any other device, the 13 Pro Max can sometimes run into issues — but iPhone 13 Pro Max problems aren’t more than a hill if you have the right troubleshooting tools to help you out.

That’s why we’ve put together this list of iPhone 13 Pro Max problems and solutions, so the only thing that matters on your phone is the maximum screen size. So check out these potential iPhone 13 Pro Max problems, and see how you can reduce them.

Problem #1: Random shutdown or reboot

The most common problem that iPhone 13 Pro Max owners encounter is the phone randomly shutting down or restarting.

possible solution

Some users say that a factory reset helps fix the problem, at least temporarily. Make sure to back up any important files and data as this step will erase everything. Go to Settings-> General-> Move or Reset iPhone and tap Erase All Content and Settings.

This problem seems to be more common after updating to iOS 15.4.1, but some users also have this problem with iOS 15.4. Since there is no proper workaround, the only option is to wait for another software update to fix the problem.

Problem #2: Phone not ringing when receiving calls

Some users reported that their iPhone 13 Pro Max is not ringing when they receive a call.

possible solution

Make sure you haven’t muted the phone by mistake. Check the silent mode switch above the volume button on the left side of the phone. It’s a small switch that you can flip around without even realizing it.

Verify that the focus mode is not active. All calls, messages, and notifications are automatically silenced when the mode is activated. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the Control Center and tap the Focus icon to turn it off if it’s enabled.

If you have connected your phone to a Bluetooth device, there may be a software glitch where the phone still thinks that the devices are connected. Open Control Center, turn off Bluetooth, and check if the problem goes away. You can turn on Bluetooth again.

Go to Settings-> Phone and check if you want to mute unknown callers. If so, turn it off to disable this feature.

Go to Settings-> Sound & Haptics. Make sure the rent size is set to maximum. You can also change the ringtone to a loud tone.

iPhone 13 Pro Max has an IP68 rating, so it is water and dust resistant. However, if your phone receives a knock, then there might be some blockage. Wait for the phone to dry completely and see if the problem goes away.

In extreme cases, a phone that is not ringing can be a hardware problem. Make an appointment at your Apple Store. They will run diagnostics and see if it is a hardware or software issue.

Problem #3: Apps not working/phone freezing

Some iPhone 13 Pro Max users are finding that the apps on their phones are not loading or are crashing.

possible solution

If an app won’t load, check if the problem is only on your phone or for everyone. Check your Apple system status to see if this is a widespread issue. For non-Apple apps, check out Download Detector.

If it’s just your phone, then there might be an issue setting up your new phone from the backup. It is best to delete the problematic app and reinstall it from the App Store.

If you can’t download the app or it’s taking too long, long-press the app’s icon on the home screen and tap Set Download Priority.

Some users say that restarting the phone will do the trick. In extreme cases, you may need to factory reset the phone and set up the device manually (don’t load apps from backup).

If an app causes the phone to freeze, then you need to do a soft reset. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Volume Down button, then press and hold the Side button until the phone restarts and you see the Apple logo.

Problem #4: Phone automatically switches to the dark mode

Some users randomly see the dark mode activated on their phones even if the theme is not changed in the settings menu.

possible solution

Go to Settings->Accessibility->Display and Text Size and disable all options (except auto-brightness if you want to). If the screen says light, even though the phone is in dark mode, switch the screen to dark. Then restart the phone, go back to settings and set it to light again.

Problem #5: “An update is required to use cellular data” error

Some iPhone 13 Pro Max owners are having issues connecting to mobile data and seeing this error on the Settings page.

possible solution

If the mobile data settings did not update automatically then you have to do it manually. Go to Settings-> General-> About-> Carrier and follow the instructions to update carrier settings.

You can also try resetting network settings (this will reset Wi-Fi settings). Go to Settings-> General-> Move or Reset iPhone-> Reset and tap Reset Network Settings.

Problem #6: Problems with Apple CarPlay

Users are having trouble properly connecting their iPhone 13 Pro Max to Apple CarPlay. Either it’s not connected, or the screen is blank, even though Siri has responded.

possible solution

There is no solution to this problem, so you will have to wait for the software update. You can try some standard troubleshooting to see if it helps.

If you are having issues with a wired connection, try a different USB cable. For wireless connectivity, make sure that both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled in Settings-> Wi-Fi and Settings-> Bluetooth.

Make sure it is on.

Go to Settings-> Screen Time-> Content & privacy restrictions >> Allowed apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

Go to Settings-> General-> CarPlay and tap Forget This Car (if it was a previously established connection). Then go through the process of setting up CarPlay from scratch.

Most iPhone 13 Pro Max issues require a software update

Most iPhone problems have no solution and they usually rely on standard troubleshooting or software updates. Apple software updates bring a lot of bug fixes, so be sure to update to the latest version of the software when it becomes available. You can check the iOS updates page to see what bugs new updates fix. Don’t forget to report any bugs and glitches you encounter to Apple using the feedback form.
