A PS4 Controller Can Be Used On A PS3?

People get faster, more advanced technology, but this also means that old accessories don’t work with newer products. 

The big tech companies might even say that allowing older accessories to work with new hardware is bad business.

Nevertheless, it’s not uncommon for older hardware to work with newer accessories.

Is It Possible To Connect My DualShock 4 To My PlayStation 3?

When you connect a DualShock PS4 controller to a PS3, you can navigate menus, access the internet, and watch Netflix. It is important to note, however, that not all games are compatible with the DualShock 4. 

A PS3 controller connected to a PS4 won’t be detected by Grand Theft Auto V, for example. The DualShock 4 controller can also be connected wirelessly to a PlayStation 3, though this is much more difficult. 

A few requirements must be met, and the process can be quite tedious, but it can be done.

What Are The Steps To Connect A PS4 Controller To A PS3?

PlayStation 3 controllers can be easily connected to PlayStation 4 controllers with a wire. 

The PlayStation 3’s expansive library of games will be fully accessible with this. It’s also possible to connect the controller wirelessly.

Wirelessly connecting a DualShock 4 to a PlayStation 3 still requires a physical cable, but once set up is complete, you can remove the cable and play.

Connect the controller to the console and turn on both devices. Select “Accessory Settings” from the settings menu.

In the “Manage Bluetooth Devices” section, click on “Register New Device.” Select “Start Scanning” and immediately disconnect the DualShock 4 from the PlayStation 3.

To share, hold down both the “PS” and “Share” buttons on the controller. Just reconnect the controller when the light bar starts flashing. WiFi Controller” will appear on the screen.

One last time, click on it to disconnect the controller. DualShock 4 controllers can now be used wirelessly with PlayStation 3.

When you have to switch the controller from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 3 every time, the process can become quite tedious.

The Troubleshooting Process

There are some games that work and some that do not. There are a number of reasons why not all games are compatible with the PlayStation 4 controller. 

Some of the games that don’t work include Burnout Paradise, Ni No Kuni, Grand Theft Auto V, Gran Turismo 6, Dead Space Extraction, and Fallout 3.

There are some games that fail to detect a controller completely, and there are some, such as Fallout 3, that don’t detect certain button presses.

These issues cannot be worked around. There are some games that require a PlayStation 3 controller to work.

There is also the possibility that vibrations aren’t working. This issue cannot be worked around. Playing with your DualShock 4 will require you to make some sacrifices. 

Also, when paired with a PlayStation 3, the DualShock 4’s headphone port and speaker won’t work. In this case, the PlayStation 3 simply detects a third-party controller is being used.

You can’t use the same features as a DualShock 4 on a PlayStation 4 because it doesn’t recognize the controller as an official Sony product.

My PS3 Controller Won’t Connect To My PS4 Controller

DualShock 4 is not compatible with the PlayStation 3 at launch. A software update is required for the PlayStation 3 to be compatible with the PlayStation 4’s controller.

DualShock 4 and PlayStation 3 can now be paired together with update 4.60. If you are having problems pairing, try connecting your PlayStation 3 to the internet and updating it.

If your PlayStation 3 is up to date, you may also be able to manually reset the DualShock 4. Right beside the left trigger on the underside of the controller is a tiny pin-sized hole.

Try again by pressing the button at the bottom of the hole with a small object. Another common problem involves the DualShock 4 being paired with another device. 

The DualShock 4 can also be used with a PC and a mobile phone. Make sure the controller isn’t already paired with another device, such as a PlayStation 4.

Using a wired connection with the DualShock 4 should not be a problem as long as the PlayStation 3 has update 4.60. 

There is always the option of using the wired connection if you are having trouble pairing the controller wirelessly. Even after updating their systems, some people report problems with wireless connectivity. 

The DualShock 4 controller is quite a step up from the PlayStation 3 controller. In many cases, playing with a wired connection is better than playing with the DualShock 3. 

It’s hard to go back to the cheap-feeling DualShock 3 once you experience the high-quality feel of the PlayStation 4 controller.

With The DualShock 4, Which Games Work And Which Do Not?

The PlayStation 4’s controller works perfectly with many popular PlayStation 3 games. DualShock 4 is compatible with all Assassin’s Creed games from the PS3 era, other than Assassin’s Creed 1.

Playing any Arkham game will also be no problem. There is also compatibility between all three Bioshock games. PlayStation 1 and 2 games that have been re-released for the PlayStation 4 work as well.

As mentioned above, some games do not work properly with DualShock 4; however, others simply act weird. LA Noire makes driving segments impossible.

Saints Row IV only works with analog sticks. Only the start button and analog sticks are recognized by the Jak and Daxter Collection.

Due to vibration not working on the DualShock 4, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Remaster Trilogy does not work.
